During our unit of inquiry, “How we express ourselves”, Pre-Kindergarten students explored different types of art. One of our inquiries focused on the key concept of form and we explored the human shape through painting, drawing, collage and sculpture. As the children used different tools and materials, they learnt about the beauty of lines, colours, shapes and texture.

While painting, the children explored the technique of mixing colours and the importance of primary colours. They also experimented with making colours lighter and darker. During drawing activities, the children were encouraged to use a variety of tools such as pencils, markers, chalk and crayons through which they began to develop an understanding of lines and how they are used to create different shapes and objects.

Creating collages was a great opportunity for the children to really start thinking about shapes, textures and patterns and consciously integrating them into their artwork. It was also a great opportunity to continue learning about taking care of our environment by recycling and reusing items that would typically be thrown away.

Inquiring into sculptures was a fascinating journey for the children who began to develop their understanding of the shape and form of solid objects. Materials such as clay, foil, foam and recycled materials provided opportunities to show creativity in three dimensions! It was a fun way to further develop fine motor skills as well as hand and eye co-ordination.

Learning about art also provided opportunities to consolidate our language learning, as the children were encouraged to express their imagination, and freely discuss their ideas in both English and Chinese. While working individually and collaboratively, the children demonstrated and communicated their respect for, and appreciation of, each other’s art. This was also evident as they guided their parents through our Pre-K Art Show.

For our young artists, this was an impressive start, and it is only just the beginning of their artistic journey!
