Kindergarten Teachers Learning Together

Canadian International School (CIS) Kindergarten homeroom teachers and single subject teachers embarked on after school professional development to discuss new approaches for engaging our youngest learners. Facilitated by our Principal JoAn Radojkovich and our Vice Principal, Andrea Strachan, the focus of the PD was exploring "What kind of teaching promotes thinking for learning?"

PD at ODC - 1

The professional development started in the Outdoor Discovery Centre (ODC) and moved inside to classrooms after a series of provocative questions were pitched to the group. Conversations were held to consider:

  • the differences between academic and intellectual activities
  • the developmental needs of our kindergarten children and how to transform an activity into a learning engagement
  • explicitly teaching knowledge and skills to children in an engaging and differentiated way
  • assessment and using data to inform learning and plan further learning
