On 6 April, CIS was a first-time competitor in the Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad (SASMO). This challenging competition caters to the top 40% of Singapore’s student population and aims to arouse interest in mathematical problem solving and to develop mathematical reasoning, logical, creative and critical thinking. Student representatives from grades 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 showed commitment and perseverance as they prepared for the competition.

The competition was held at the Lakeside Campus and the students had 90 minutes to complete their respective grade-level tests. The test challenged students' thinking in different ways and all of our competitors represented our school exceptionally!

Special mention goes to certain students from each grade who attained a score that placed them in the top 40% of all competitors. According to SASMO, this cohort represents part of the top 40% of all of the participants (Gold representing scores within 8%, Silver representing scores within the next 12% and Bronze representing scores within the next 20%). These students have been invited to join the Singapore team to participate in the World Mathletics Invitational (WMI) in Kuala Lumpur on July 16, 2016 and in the Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC) 2016 to be held in Singapore on August 13, 2016.

We would also like to offer a huge thank you to Kendra Jones, Paulette Vultaggio, Kevin Collins, Yingtao Yang, Daisy Zhang, Carl Brown and Amanda Griffith for their time, effort and support during the lead up to the competition. Teachers support during these undertakings is invaluable.
